International Relations, Batch 2022

KEZIA ANDJANIE GRISELLA

"My name is Kezia Andjanie. I was born in Jakarta, but grew up in South Tangerang. I went to Athalia junior and senior high school, which is also in South Tangerang. Since I don't have any siblings that I can play with, I try to find activities that I can enjoy by myself. So, I developed an interest in reading books. I spent my childhood reading books about animals and science. But now, I'm mostly interested in reading novels, especially in the classic and mystery genres. Another thing that I'm interested in is modern calligraphy, sometimes called brush calligraphy. I've been learning calligraphy since I was in junior high and still trying to improve my skill. I like to do calligraphy because it calms me and helps me to relieve stress."

Why did you chose IULI?

"I chose to go to IULI because I got information that the university is offering scholarships. And when I check the website for its variety of study programs, IULI has International Relations, which is one of the study programs that I like. The distance between IULI and where I live is also not that far, which is perfect for me. Initially, I wanted to go to a public university because the tuition fee usually is more affordable than private university. Thus, I tried to take SBMPTN, but I failed. Not long after, I got the information about the SML Scholarships. And the deduction for the tuition fee is quite big, which would help my family's financial condition."

"I choose International Relations because I'm interested in politics and it offers a wide job opportunity. The learning environment is also great, the students are taught to cooperate and collaborate with each other, not to compete against each other."

What were your first impressions of a study at IULI?

"That all of the courses would be taught in full English and the lecturers would be kind of strict. Turns out, I was wrong. The lecturers still give the students a chance to get used to speaking in English. They don't force the students to use English all the time because some of us were taught in school that mainly use Indonesian, like me. And the lecturers are not strict at all, they even like to joke or tell stories in between teaching."

Adaptation. When moving to another country, the most challenging thing is adaptation. But as I said, the OIA NFU and IULI helped us to adapt.

IULI was undoubtedly very supportive. Some procedures were not optimal at that time, such as the collection of documents needed at that time was a bit messy, there were problems in applying for a visa, but that's all I can say is normal because I was the first batch to depart. Starting from 2nd Grade of elementary school, my family and I moved to Surabaya, where I would stay until the end of my senior high school at SMAK St. Louis 1. Then we moved again to Tangerang, where we lived until now and I started my university study at IULI. I am primarily interested in the topics of human rights, history, philosophy, ideology, democracy, education, and public policy."

Why did you chose IULI?

"I chose IULI due to consideration of many factors; primarily that it was close to our living place in Serpong, that IULI offers International Relations as an area of study, and that it primarily uses English as a language of conduct and also the opportunity of study in other countries.

My primary reason for ultimately going with IULI is that I sought freedom of inquiry and discussion in my studies that I felt will not be available in public universities. "

"The studies at IULI provided me with numerous opportunities to grow and learn. The study activities, the staff and lecturers, and the student body all provided a positive environment and experience that is extremely valuable."

Did you study abroad? If so, How did you like studying abroad?

"Me and two other students from INR 2016 got the opportunity to participate in a student exchange program with the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences (OTH Regensburg), in Bavaria, Germany, for our research and internship semesters from September 2019 to September 2020.

It was not easy at first as there were a lot of administrative preparations, language studies, and of course we also still have to complete our academic tasks and examinations. When we arrived there, there is also a lot that needs adapting to such as local customs and culture, especially when we would be living and studying alone in a foreign country.

Thanks to the help from the International Team of IULI and OTH, it was a constructive learning experience that was both challenging and fun. We gained new friends, new experiences, and new perspectives from studying abroad and was able to successfully complete our internship and thesis research."

"IULI supported liaising and contact with the OTH, and provided guidance for the thesis research process as well as other administrative requirements, particularly also for the visa process.

Please describe your study at IULI in one sentence.

What do you plan to do after your graduation? Do you think studying in IULI can help you fulfill your future plans?

"After graduation, I had the opportunity of doing an internship in the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Assistance (the AHA Centre), and then also continuing to a full-time position there.

Yes. The International Relations at IULI helped me take the job I have aimed for and to take a step in fulfilling my plans, which is to obtain a good job using my skills and experiences.

We were introduced to the AHA Centre during around 2017-2018. At the time, we were studying Disaster Management as part of the International Relations program. One of the study activities of the Disaster Management subject was a study trip to the Graha BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana) to study from the disaster management experts there, and also to visit the AHA Centre which was located in the same building.

From the introduction there, I became interested in the field and in possibly joining the AHA Centre as an intern. While I did not get the chance yet back then, I finally got the chance to do an internship there on January 2020 as a fresh graduate. After doing the internship for around 6 months, I was able to continue directly to a full-time position until now.

Through the study of INR and the research and internship semesters abroad, I am well-prepared for the international work environment and challenges of my job at the AHA Centre."
