Hochschule Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has no shortage of outstanding qualities: It is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the state of Baden-Württemberg and amongst those with the strongest research capabilities, and for years it has performed very well in rankings such as the renowned CHE university ranking in the ZEIT study guide.Practical orientation and an international focus in teaching are writ large at HKA. A key component is the practical semester, which students complete in a company of their choice. In most cases, the final thesis is also written in a company; many students get to know their future employer here. A key quality feature is also the good supervision situation. Students study in small groups and are supported by numerous tutorials. At an early stage they can work on research projects, gain experience and, on this basis, pursue an academic career.

Student Body (2022)

Of the approximately 7,800 students at HKA, more than 1,000 come from abroad; at all of Karlsruhe's universities, with their total of approximately 43,000 students, the figure is about 8,000. The proportion of foreigners in the total population of Karlsruhe is, at almost 30%, significantly higher. Foreign students thus find a strongly international, culturally open environment in our city.

Research

As a university, we contribute to a sustainable society with practice-oriented and application-ready research and development. In order to enable and support this overarching goal, we address in particular the essential requirements of resources, work, mobility and information within the framework of our specific research areas.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

26 Bachelor programs

22 Master programs

Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer

Whoever wants to start their own business or develop and implement their own ideas in another setting, needs skills for this that cannot be learned from books or in frontal teaching. That is why we not only teach students theoretical knowledge, but also enable them to apply and reflect on it. Through the initiative of the Founders' Lab xLab and founding-enthusiastic professors, staff and alumni of all faculties [Link Ambassadors] teaching has changed greatly in many areas in recent years. Many of the courses are now designed so that students learn through real-life problems and by sharing their experiences. With co-working spaces, networking events, advising and an active community, there are also optimal conditions for all those who want to become co-creators of tomorrow's economy and society outside of teaching. A list of all the offers can be found here. One example of practice-oriented teaching is the Startup Semester. Here students from different faculties work together for a semester on entrepreneurial challenges. These come from alumni or fellow students who themselves are in the process of founding and are looking for reinforcement.

Research

The TU Kaiserslautern (TUK) is a research university with international visibility. Research of the highest quality according to the recognized international standards of the respective disciplines is central to the self-image of TUK. Quality and strength of research in its entire spectrum arise from the disciplines and from the orientation towards the major research topics relevant to society. From the wealth of excellent research at the TUK, six strategic research fields are at the center of interdisciplinary profiling in the university development plan:

- Interactions of light, spin and matter - Quantum phenomena, model systems and technologies.
- Membrane and systems biology, bioanalytics
- Resource efficiency and sustainable development
- High performance materials and engineering, production engineering
- Mathematical modeling, algorithms and simulation
- Digitization of the economy and society.

The research strategy steers a dynamic process of profile building, significantly supported by the research initiative of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Current projects from the area of coordinated third-party funded research (including six collaborative research centers) are particularly representative of the successful profile building with international visibility.
